Says who? Says a federal judge. I can't link to it because it's not yet in the sluggish traditional media. On Friday afternoon, a federal judge ordered lobstermen to do more to protect whales. This is especially ironic right now, with lobstermen wanting to sell sustainable lobster, to capitalize on the "green" market. Strangely, Maine lobstermen haven't yet figured out that sustainable fishing means not catching whales.
Maybe Maine lobstermen will follow the lead of Massachusetts, start protecting whales, and get serious about sustainability. Tweet

I can't believe it took an act of law to point out that such barbaric activities should be stopped.
The photo looks like a gill net and not a lobster line which if true is a bit misleading. To be fair to the fishermen this could be classed as an emerging issue as until recently entanglement by ropes on any kind of pots would not have been seen as one of the priority bycatch issues. Give the fishermen a chance to do something about it before jumping in with comments like one of the previous commenters that lobster potting is a "barbaric activity".
Let's hope that the urging of a judge will suffice to save the lives of many whales...though somehow I don't think it's enough :(

... i seriously doubt that they would, considering that most humans are greedy for money and would do nothing about the whales if it means less loss. if they knew that they were hurting the whales,and they wanted to help, they would have done so long ago.
I partially agree with Mike but also think a little pro-active work from the government couldn't hurt.
This is NOT an emerging issue. Lobstermen have been fighting against whale protection for more than a decade, including using their Maine senators to block their own "compromise" proposal.
The popularity of Save the whales is great, how can it be used to help more of the endangered marine species. Save the fish
