Superheroes attack Great Pacific Garbage Patch

What's bigger than Texas, floats, and is a stinky rotten mess? It's the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a floating convergance of our garbage that lives in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Who's doing something about this nasty mess? You are! Yesterday a half million people cleaned up ocean garbage in the world's largest volunteer event for the ocean. Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup is a day when people get together and do something good for our oceans. If you want to help, it's never too late, just go out and do it. I picked up garbage on Vashon Island, Washington, and it felt good.

You can do something about ocean garbage, and be part of something big. We can't eliminate ocean garbage with a one day cleanup, but maybe one turtle won't get tangled up in junk like the photo above. And maybe we'll all be more careful with our buying and disposal habits the other 364 days of the year.

Coastal Clean Up Day was always an important part of our family life when we lived on the coast. Today we're land locked, but still working on environmental projects.

You post hit something in my heart. There are so many people that feel that just saying they want to do something or just saying they believe in something will make a difference. The difference can only be made by getting out there and representing.

in addition to garbage in the ocean- people can also clean up the garbage in their own neighborhoods. (chicago has a major public cheetos problem). when people litter i often say, "oh you dropped this".

Great post I just did one on the same line the other day. http://xstreemfishing.blogspot.com/2008/09/garbage-and-all-that-washes-up-on-beach.html It is a problem that we all must tackle all the time.
Cheers

Great post! We should also take the same consideration for our lakes -- I don't know how many "forgotten" plastic lures and line I found while fishing today. The lake is not the place to dump your trash!

I seem to remember either hearing or reading about those garbage patches in the middle of the ocean. From what I understand they develop where oceanic currents converge thus creating a spinning vortex. It seems awfully convenient that the ocean puts our garbage in a few spots, why not just pick it up?

I have an idea: Instead of making tobacco companies spend millions of dollars making commercials in favor of not buying their own products we should make them spend the money on cleaning up the environment starting with the Great Pacific Garbage Patch! People have been smoking for almost a thousand years and show no real sign of stopping. The money would be better spent on something not related to smoking at all. I dont know. I think its a good idea, and I am a smoker...

Great blog! Thank You for informing me of this disgusting Great Pacific Garbage Patch, GAG, I am in shock. Here's my idea of a solution for the GPGP, build a fleet of giant, floating recycling plants/ships, drive out & dig in! Garbage that is floating is probably easily recyclable, what a huge, already refined source of raw material! A la Leslie Johnson's idea, we can have the tobacco companies pay for the recycling ships. Thanks Again! Let's all be part of the Solution, instead of part of the Problem! Great to see every bit of info about this massive issue. I read about this a while ago and am trying to work out how I can go plastic free. It's quite difficult considering the applications of plastic in our modern environment. Good stuff.
