Plastic bags vs. people and animals

Will people stop plastic bag pollution in our oceans when the bags start to attack us? Check out this video from Save the Bay (San Francisco Bay) and let me know if you feel moved to do something to stop the plastic bag menace.

It's a bizarre concept, and very well done IMO. It's an "ocean of plastic bags," and not a very nice one.

Plastic, plastic, everywhere
And all the shores did stink;
Plastic, plastic, everywhere
Nor any of it did sink.

Great film, great campaign and great post. I also saw that the Algalita Marine Research Foundation teamed up with musician Micha Wolf to produce a collaborative music video on plastic pollution. Check out "One by One" at http://www.micahwolf.com/

Very clever ad.

There is not a day I go fishing out of San Francisco I do not stop to pick up plastic bags floating around the fishing grounds. When I see them I will get them if I can.

It is always a pleasure to make the ocean I love a little better than when I found it.

It is very easy for us to just look at the garbage floating around and say how bad it is and another thing to go and pick it up and dispose of it properly. I choose the latter and I swear it gives you good luck.

I like it. A lot. Very nice conceptually and well executed.

But I wonder what the results are if you ask 30 random people from a train stop or even on a campus since I am already predisposed to like it since it communicates an issue I am passionate (and disgusted) about. I do think it is a brilliant concept well executed and I would predict a good reception from a wide cross section of the public, but I would want to check it first.

ED, you say in your post that you fish. Then you say this: "It is always a pleasure to make the ocean I love a little better than when I found it."

I'm just curious, when you go out into that incredible wilderness for the sole purpose of killing some of its imhabitants, how is that leaving it better than when you found it?

I think it's a great ad for the converted, and it won't reach people who are unaware of the problem. Just my opinion.

We're talking to ourselves with this type of ads.

Great Ad... wish we had one for Florida!
My idea: All stores should start charging customers for the use of plastic bags (like a quarter per bag)... then people will realize its cheaper for them to buy a reusable bag for a few dollars. In the long run it will help save money and the environment... Is it really that simple? hmmm YUP!

I have been pulling plastic out of the ocean for 25 years. Last week i gathered the components for a grabber that i plan to make handy on the good skiff...

Pulled about 25 baloons off the surface with my new device last weekend. I was on a two day underwater photographic expedition to the Island of the Blue Dolphins...
