5 years of blogfish

Who knew that blogfish would still be around after 5 years? I certainly didn't expect that longevity. A few visitors later (right), a bit of fun, some strange reactions (photo below left), and blogfish is still going strong.

There's even a spin-off site, Swim Around Bainbridge.

I started this site to see what new media is all about, and now I now use "new" (not so new anymore) media in my job. Never expected that to happen. After a couple of years of blogfish I upgraded to a better job after some colleagues at the old job had a fit about me blogging without an editor. I didn't expect to move to Europe, away from paradise in the Pacific Northwest. But now here I am in the foothills of the Swiss Alps, looking at sunset on Mont Blanc as I write this.

What happens in the next 5 years? I'm part of a fun new media project that will stretch some boundaries, I think. Maybe we'll see it show up here at the right time.

Thanks to all of you out there, my 350,000 visitors, for all the fun, and here's to 5 more years. Wonder where I'll be then?

Blogfish turns 300,000

Blogfish hit 300,000 visits (nearly half a million page views) on 1 October, 2010, at midnight Central Europe Time. Lucky visit number 300,000 was an Arabic speaker from Tunisia, clicking in to "Plastic in 40% of turtle stomachs.", which (s)he found through Google image search

Who knew in April 2006, when blogfish birthed, that the damn thing would still be kicking 4.5 years later?

Here's a few interesting tidbits about visitors number 299,999 to 300,002:

299,999: Palestine, Texas, viewing "Smokestacks at Sea."
300,001: Auberry, California, viewing "Akumal Underwater."
300,002: London, England...

Is blogfish going too soft?

Commenter Jeff Jolley gave me a wake-up call today. Integrity demands that I elevate his comment to the front page. I wonder if anyone cares to comment on this comment? Am I going too soft?

Jeff's comment:
This is frustrating. I feel that you have softened. Are you still TNC..or ONC? Since you have been in Switzerland the blog has definitely changed. You're not pushing the issues in our face or being politically incorrect. You did that before. The tuna posts are a prime example. Japan doesn't get a break just because they are the last country to still exploit something in a detrimental way. Stay "in our face" about how we are damaging our resources.

Blogfish in a French commercial

This is what we do for fun in French-speaking Europe. I got a part in this commercial, I'm the guy smiling at the very end. Yeah, with a lot of makeup.

200,000 visits to blogfish

Thanks to YOU, blogfish logged visit number 200,000 on Sunday morning. Who knew we'd be at it things long together, you and me?

Here's how I celebrated the blessed event (photo at right). The water was a balmy 48F, visibility 8-12 feet, calm wind, and overall it was a great swim.

Here's a photo (below) of the ocean off Fletcher Bay on Bainbridge Island, on this perfectly calm day, with the Olympic Mountains just peeking out of the clouds in the background.

Now let's dig in and build ocean connections even higher, on our way to the next 200,000 visits!!

Oh, just for fun, visit number 200,000 came from Salt Lake City at 6:36 am PDT.
